Brunei Darussalam has reached a blood donation rate of 2.9 percent in 2024, continuing a consistent trend of achievement since 2014. This meets the level recommended by the World Health Organization, WHO to adequately support the country's needs, particularly in emergency situations. The matter was stated by the Minister of Health in a message in conjunction with World Blood Donor Day celebrated every 14th of June as a global initiative to raise public awareness on the need for safe and sustainable blood and blood products. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jaafar also said, to ensure this achievement is sustained, the Blood Donation Centre will continue its proactive approach in encouraging and facilitating voluntary blood donation campaigns across the country. In addition, the Blood Donation Centre at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital, along with blood banks in hospitals nationwide, remains committed to providing a safe and sufficient supply of blood and blood products, supporting the overall effectiveness of the national healthcare system.
As part of the Ministry of Health's ongoing efforts to ensure universal access to safe blood transfusions, a project under the Second National Development Plan for the construction of a National Blood Centre has been approved. The facility will offer a safe and conducive environment for blood donation, featuring a dedicated blood donation suite to increase accessibility and attract more walk-in donors. It will also be equipped with lab facilities and a well-organised blood storage system that complies with international standards.
The objective of this year's celebration was to express appreciation and recognise voluntary blood donors who contribute significantly to the health and well-being of the people in the country. This year, the WHO, together with partners and the entire global community, unite to celebrate World Blood Donor Day with the theme and slogan "Donate Blood, Give Hope: Together We Help Save Lives". The slogan highlights the impact of blood donors who have made a big difference and gave the gift of life by bringing new hope to those in need.
